The Week of November 2, 2020

It's shaping up to be a great first week of November!  We have been spending a lot of time working on writing skills using a structured writing curriculum.  The colorful outlines and rough drafts we’ve been using over the past weeks have helped create some amazing final copies!  During Monday’s writing lesson, we will be having a “writing scrimmage” where everyone will be asked to respond to a prompt.  I will use the responses to show growth in writing abilities during our time together and to plan future writing lessons.  This is an activity that I ask all students to complete without any assistance from others.  There will NOT be a followup associated with this activity.

The rest of the week we will be similar to our previous weeks together.  Here is a list of weekly work:

1. A daily (except Wednesday) Zoom lesson and follow-up activity

2. Two Saxon math skills maintenance assignments

3. A reading comprehension assignment

4. A cultural assignment (posted each Wednesday)

5. A spelling quiz (posted each Wednesday)

6. A vocabulary activity (posted each Wednesday)

7. Choice works (not required, but highly recommended)

I highly encourage you to have some fun completing some of the choice works I suggest each week.  While not required, they do offer some enrichment opportunities and a chance to engage in creative endeavors.

Have a spooktacular weekend,

Mr. Trent

The Week of October 26, 2020

O hushed October morning mild,
Thy leaves have ripened to the fall;
Tomorrow’s wind, if it be wild,
Should waste them all.

-Robert Frost

We’ve had our share of mild October mornings lately, haven’t we?! I’ve enjoyed spending these mornings presenting lessons to our class!

This upcoming week we continue our daily lessons in each of the subject areas.  To review, weekly assignments for “Mr. Trent’s E-Learning Class” include the following:

A daily (except Wednesday) Zoom lesson and follow-up activity
Two Saxon math skills maintenance assignments
A reading comprehension assignment
A cultural assignment (posted each Wednesday)
A spelling quiz (posted each Wednesday)
A vocabulary activity (posted each Wednesday)
Choice works (not required, but highly recommended)

These works are due each Friday.  The ItsLearning gradebook feature is a wonderful resource to use when keeping track of the completion of required works.  I’ve been reminding everyone to check the gradebook daily to keep abreast of work.  6th grade families can also find grades in PowerSchool.  Please let me know if you have any questions about accessing either of these places work is recorded.

Have a nice “hushed October” weekend,
Mr. Trent

The Week of October 19, 2020

I had the best time meeting with everyone last week during our student/parent/teacher conferences!  I am quite humbled with how our community has come together during this unprecedented time to meet the needs of our children.  I really enjoyed hearing about how you are “making this work” in your homes.

As we make this transition from using Google Class to assign and submit works to ItsLearning, I understand there will be a few hiccups.  You may need a bit more help uploading and submitting work.  Incomplete works are clearly noted on the Itslearning course pages.  Please complete any work that is past due.  Don’t hesitate to email or ItsLearning message me with any questions about the process.

I’ve updated the daily check-off list to reflect term 2 works (including Saxon math practice that we will begin this Tuesday).  The new check-off list is found below.  Feel free to use it to help you structure your day.

It’s time for a weekend!

Mr. Trent

The Week of October 12, 2020

Welcome to the first week of term 2!  There are a few changes that will be taking place as we begin our new term together:

  1.  You no longer need to mark your daily attendance!  You will automatically be marked present when you sign in to ItsLearning each day.  That being said, it is important that you are logging on to ItsLearning every day to be marked present.  If you do not visit ItsLearning, you will be marked absent.

  2. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each lesson.  You will need to have their camera on when attendance is taken.  Afterwards, you are able to turn off the camera, if you wish.

  3. We will no longer be using Google Classroom to submit work.  All works will be assigned and submitted using ItsLearning.

  4. Your ItsLearning calendar has been updated to only show lessons you are required to attend.  It will no longer show the entire schedule.  Hopefully, this will result in a less cluttered and easier to read schedule.

Student/Parent/Teacher conferences will take place this week!  I’m looking forward to getting a chance to sit with everyone and have a brief discussion about all the awesome works that were done in term 1!  If your family has not signed up for a conference, please do so by visiting this link:

Once again, Ms. Lisa is hosting a Book Character Pumpkin Patch!  This year it will be a virtual event you can join from home!  See the flyer below for more information.

Finally, remember that Friday, October 8th and Monday, October 12 are school holidays.  You will not have any lessons or work to complete those days. See you Tuesday, October 13th!

Have a great long weekend!

Mr. Trent

The Week of October 5, 2020

Well, we’ve made it to the last week of term 1!  It has been a rollercoaster, hasn’t it?!  Honestly, I couldn’t pick a better group of people to ride along with on all these twisty loops and hair-raising hills!

This week, we will be continuing our daily lessons on writing, arithmetic, cultural studies, spelling, vocabulary, and geometry.  On Wednesday, you will be taking the first spelling test of the year!  It will be the same format of the inventory you took where they will watch a recording of me telling you the words to spell. You will then use a key to check it and report how many you spelled correctly.  That day, they will also complete a vocabulary activity using the word list they received last week.  Please know that you will NOT need to have the definitions memorized, because it will be an “open book” activity.  I just ask that you spend a few minutes each day looking at the words and definitions in preparation for the activity.  The more you study the words, the easier the assignment will be.

Thursday is the last day of the term.  All work from term 1 is due that day.  Please go through all of the required assignments in Google Classroom to view teacher comments on submitted works and to complete any unfinished works.

I am looking forward to meeting virtually with your family at our upcoming student/parent/teacher conferences!  Please use the following link to choose your conference time:

Finally, remember that Friday, October 9th and Monday, October 12th are school holidays! Enjoy your much-deserved time away from the computer!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mr. Trent
