The Week of May 1, 2017

It's musical week!  We have so much to do to prepare for Thursday's performance of The Story of Language!  We will spend our time together practicing out lines, singing our song, and creating the set and costumes.  Tickets are on sale now in the media center for $5.  They will also be available the night of the show at the door.  Please remind your family and friends who are coming to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit upon.

We will also take some time Monday and Tuesday to share your science presentations.  Don't forget to use your rubric as you put the finishing touches on your speech.

We are going to the beach Friday!  Our fieldtrip to Tybee Island will include a birds-eye view of the coastline from the beautiful Tybee Lighthouse.  We'll enjoy a picnic lunch followed by a walk on the beach.  We'll get many chances to discuss a number of topics we've studied this year including: tides, erosion, currents, and ocean topography.  To attend this field trip, you must return the permission slip and have all of your required assignments completed.

I'll see you Monday morning,
Mr. Trent

Savannah Philharmonic Fieldtrip

Thank-you to the Savannah Philharmonic for allowing us to sit in on one of their rehearsals.  It was really neat to see "behind the scenes" at what goes into bringing a beautiful piece of music to the stage.  After seeing the philharmonic, we went to Ellis Square for a picnic.  What a beautiful day!

River Street Fieldtrip

We had a great time exploring River Street today.  Along the way, we talked about the importance of the river in the history of our City.  Our day ended with a picnic by the Waving Girl Statue!

The Week of April 24, 2017

I've miss you this past week!  I'm looking forward to seeing your research concerning natural resources you've been working on.  I'm also looking forward to an exciting week with you!

We will be taking the last administration of the MAP assessment Monday.  Please take your time, try your best, and take advantage of this opportunity to "show what you know".

Your last graded assignment for the year will be a science presentation.  Monday, you will choose a random topic in which to create a 3-7 minute presentation for you classmates.  All of the topics will be items we've studied this year.  Feel free to use any of the resources on the science shelf or in your PIN folders to help you.  Presentations will start Monday, May 1.  Here is the rubric you will use to plan your presentation:

We have TWO field trips this week!  Thursday we will walk along the Savannah River as docents from the Massie Center will share with us the importance of the waterway to our city.  We'll end our walk with lunch outside next to the Waving Girl Statue!  Friday, we will go to the Civic Center to see a rehearsal of the Savannah Philharmonic.  This will be followed by a picnic in Ells Square!  Cross your fingers for pleasant weather!

Of course, we will be spending every free second continuing to prepare for Charles Ellis Presents: The Story of Language!  This week we will begin creating the costumes, set, and props!  Be sure your lines and song lyrics are memorized.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Trent

The Week of April 17, 2017

What a perfect three day weekend!  I hope you enjoyed the beautiful Savannah spring days during you time off!

I'm sorry to share that this week I will out of the building most of the week.  I am working with some colleagues on creating new and exciting science lessons!  Ms. Fe will be your substitute, and i'm expecting exemplary behavior while I am away.

During your work time, you will be continuing your research on natural resources in preparation for you test Friday.  Remember, this is your last test of the year in science!  Use your Study Guide to help you prepare.  Please wait to hand in any work from your choice sheet until Friday.  Ms. Fe will also have a daily science comprehension task you will work on and check together.

I am not assigning any homework this weekend so you can focus on memorizing the Charles Ellis Present: The Story of Language parts and song.

Have a wonderful week!
Mr. Trent

The Week of April 10, 2017

This week is shaping up to be a great one!  I can't wait to get back to our "normal" schedule after a week of GMAS testing.

This week we will spend most of our time focusing on science...I'm sure your math minds could use a break after all of our review lessons!  Our topic of study for the next two weeks will be natural resources.  You will not have a vocabulary quiz this week, but you will have a test next Friday.  Use the following study guide to help you prepare.

Over the next two weeks, you will be using your class time to research natural resources.  This "Resources Roundup" choice sheet can be used to guide your work.  Please have three choices completed by Friday, April 21.

We will also spend some time this week working on Charles Ellis Presents: The Story of Language.  Auditions for the narrator part will take place on Tuesday.  Please log on to Google Classroom to see the narrator script.  Use this to practice for your audition.

This Thursday is Field Day!  I know you are excited to spend the day in Daffin Park.  This annual event is one of my favorite days of the year, and I hope you are ready to enjoy the day outside!  Please refer to the note I sent home concerning field day to make sure you are prepared for the day.  It is important that you have completed all of your required assignments by Thursday, so you can participate in this fun activity.  Anyone who has missing work will need to complete it before you can participate.

Parent/Teacher conferences will take place this week!  I'm looking forward to meeting with your families once again.  Please contact me ASAP if you need to reschedule your conference time.

Progress reports will also be issued this week.  Review, sign, and return them the following day to your homeroom teacher.

Don't forget:  there is no school this Friday.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Trent

The Week of April 3, 2017

It's GMAS week!  I know that with any test, there can come with it a sense of nervousness.  Please know that you have worked hard all year, and this test is just another way (just like classwork, homework, and research) to show what you know.  Be confident in yourself!

The Language Arts GMAS will take place Monday and Tuesday.  The Math GMAS will take place Wednesday and Thursday.  The tests will take place in the morning each day.

Our afternoons will be spent preparing for Charles Ellis Presents: The Story of Language!  Ellis has been presenting operas and musicals for close to 30 years.  You are part of a cherished tradition, and I hope you enjoy your third and final year of taking part in it!

Enjoy your weekend,
Mr. Trent
