The Week of April 1, 2019

"April is a promise that May is bound to keep." - Hal Borland

We have much to accomplish the first week of April.  Because the GMAS tests start the second week of April, we will take some time this week to review what we've been discussing this year in Social Studies.  Your follow-up work will include assessing your understanding of concepts we've explored starting last August!  I'm looking forward to taking a trip "down memory lane" with you!  We will also continue our novel studies with a focus on figurative language.  Math lessons will also include some review work of previously studied concepts.  Your required assignments will include your weekly www.quill.org and www.newsela.com works.  You will NOT have vocabulary this week, but you will have a word study quiz on Friday based on the following words:

arrow group
-ation: proclamation, reclamation, acclamation, explanation,  exclamation
-ption: consumption, presumption, assumption, resumption, reception

swirl group
thr-: threat, through, thrill, three, throne
shr-: shred, shrink, shrank, shriek, shrimp

star group
Double Consonant followed by le: giggle, middle, cattle, bubble, saddle
Single Consonant followed by le: title, eagle, marble, candle, turtle

Parent/teacher conferences are taking place this week.  I'm so excited to speak to everyone about what's been happening here at Ellis during term 3.

A practice GMAS test will take place on Wednesday and Thursday.  It will give you an indication of what to expect the actual test to look like.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Trent

6th Grade Camping Trip to Dahlonega, GA

The 6th grade trip to Dahlonega, GA was a huge success!  The threat of rain the entire week did not ruin our fun, as our days were mostly dry! We enjoyed hiking, stream walks, games, dancing, and good food!

The Week of March 4, 2019

It’s the first week of March! This month holds a lot of excitement: St. Patrick’s Day, Spring Break, and our 6th grade camping trip!
This week our lessons will focus on reconstruction after the Civil War, American politics in the second half of the 20th century, and continued research of Australia. Math lessons will involve working with perimeter. In addition, our novel studies will include discussion about figurative language.
Monday is vocabulary quiz day based upon the words your received last Monday. Reminder: 6th graders will have a map quiz instead, and will need to identify lists places on a map of Australia.
Because it is a short week (no school on Friday!!!), our weekly word study quiz will take place Thursday, March 7. This will be a “non-sorting” review-of-previous-word list since you have one less day to prepare.
Swirl group: wound, crowd, awesome, trauma, avoid, decoy, barge, scorn, assure, burn
Star group: moisture, voyager, season, increase, toothache, raccoon, soldier, suppose, brightly, describe
Arrow group: athlete, humanity, column, muscular, altercation, decomposition, abduction, illustration, abomination, custodian
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Trent
