The Week of November 27, 2017

Welcome back from Thanksgiving Break!  I hope you've enjoyed your time off.  Classes will resume Monday, and I have a lot of fun lessons planned for this week!  We will be talking about Australia, algebraic equations, fraction computation, the California Gold Rush, and magnetism (just to name a few).  At Wednesday's writing workshop, we will begin drafting our responses to the prompts we've been researching.  You will have a vocabulary test Friday based on the words I will give you tomorrow.  In addition to your follow-up work, please remember to complete your weekly www.tenmarks.com assignment and current event journal response.

The second administration of the MAP assessment will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday.  It may be a good idea to have and extra-healthy breakfast each of those mornings so you can ensure your brain is ready to process the questions the best it can.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I had such a great time ringing in the Thanksgiving holiday at our gratitude pot-luck!  Thank you so much for bringing in so much good food to share; I am truly thankful!

Gratitude Pot-Luck

Our World Toilet Day parade was a smashing success!  The floats you created did a great job advocating for proper sanitation practices all over the earth!

MESS Holiday Party - Dec. 1 @ 6:30-9:00

I know everyone has Thanksgiving on the brain right now, but as soon as we return - it's time for the annual MESS Holiday Party! Friday, Dec. 1st from 6:30 pm - 9 pm at 121 East 45th Street. The Montessori Education Society of Savannah (MESS) is raising funds to help support the teachers of Charles Ellis who are working on their Montessori certification. Come join us on Dec. 1st to celebrate our teachers and hear from them about the important work they are doing. Enjoy delicious catering from What's for Dinner Savannah, drinks, dessert and raffle items from our awesome Ellis community. The party is FREE and open to all supporters of Montessori education in Savannah. Adults only, please.

Please note: new location this year!

Also note: in previous years, MESS hosted a kids' party at the school during the adult party. There is no kids' party this year. There are too many teachers to celebrate at the adult party to staff the kid party appropriately. But MESS has got your food, drinks, entertainment and prizes - even your transportation* - all arranged for you. You just have to book your child care. And tell the kiddos who look forward to their own party not to worry. MESS is planning a family movie night on the lawn after the holidays!

*Host committee members have generously reserved car services from Red Cap Savannah for anyone who needs transportation from the party on Dec. 1. For more info, please email Savannahmess@gmail.com

The Week of November 20, 2017

I've been looking forward to this week for a long time!  Our two days of school before Thanksgiving break are going to be full of fun and learning!

World Toilet Day - November 19

We will be celebrating World Toilet Day (November 19th) with a special activity that will highlight the importance of proper sanitation practices around the world.  It's important that you bring in a shoe box Monday.  It will be used to create a Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade float that will advocate for World Toilet Day!  Here is more information about the activity:

Tuesday is our Gratitude Pot-Luck lunch!  I'm looking forward to welcoming your family to our classroom to share food and good times!  Check out your invitation below:

As we get closer to this time of Thanksgiving, I think of the many blessings I have.  I consider the time I spend with the people at Charles Ellis Montessori Academy as one of these!

I'll see you Monday,
Trent

The Peg Board

The peg board is a material that can be used to show how to square numbers.  Each of the colored beads represents a specific place value.  You can find the answer by adding together the value of each of the parts of the square.

Plant Identification

This week, some students are using dichotomous keys to identity unknown plants.  There is a great online key you can use at: https://www.arborday.org/trees/whattree/

The Week of November 12, 2017

November is quickly passing!  I have some fun things planned for this LAST FULL SCHOOL WEEK of the month.  The lessons will include working with types climates, percents, fraction computation, and post-Civil War America, novel studies, and continued work with our writers' workshop (with a focus on prewriting).   Please remember to finish your follow-up work after each of your lessons.  Your required assignments will include your weekly Google Classroom Journal, based upon a current event article.  Please have the journal completed by the end of the day THURSDAY.  This will allow Ms. Koral and myself time to respond to your work Friday.  You will also have a word study quiz Friday.  You will get your words Monday.  Please study them daily to be prepared for your quiz. As always, structure your time so you can achieve your 30 minute weekly goal of online www.tenmarks.com practice and weekly Greek & Latin root work requirement.  Don't forget to do  your nightly homework: studying your word study words for 10 minutes and reading a book of your choice for 20 minutes.

We will be doing a special project for World Toilet Day the week of November 20th.  Please bring in a shoebox for this project by Monday, November 20th.

I'm looking forward to our Gratitude Pot-luck Lunch on Tuesday, November 21!  Click HERE for your invite!

Finally, progress reports will be issued Friday. Please sign and return them Monday, November 20th.
Have great weekend,

Mr. Trent

Weekly Wednesday Writers' Workshop

Each Wednesday we meet as a group for a writers' workshop experience.  During this time, we use exemplar pieces of writing to improve our own writing skills.  We follow the writing process to create well-polished pieces for publishing.  I'm so excited to see the great written work that will surely come from our time working together!

The Week of November 6, 2017

Hello from Knoxville, TN!  I'm enjoying my time in the Great Smokey Mountains. The changing of the seasons is amazingly beautiful here, and I wish I could bring a bit of it home to Savannah for you to experience.

I'll be back Monday with a lot of lessons to share!  The lessons will include working with types of weather, ratios/proportions, fraction computation, and post-Civil War America, and (of course) our novel studies. You will also have a vocabulary quiz Friday.  You will get your words Monday.  Please study them daily to be prepared for your quiz. As always, structure your time so you can achieve your 30 minute weekly goal of online www.tenmarks.com practice and weekly Greek & Latin root work requirement.

Please keep the following things in mind concerning this upcoming week:

1.  I did not send progress reports home last Friday, so there is nothing to return Monday morning.  I will check the work you did in my absence and give you your next progress report Friday, November 10.

2.  Friday is the 4th grade field trip to the Jepson Center to see the Rodin exhibit.  If you have not already done so, please return your permission slip and media release.  I cannot allow you to attend the trip if you don't return your slips by Thursday.

I'll see you Monday,
Mr. Trent

X-ray Vision

We met with Ms. Kirsten's class today to talk about the bones inside our hands.  After watching an introductory video from www.mysterscience.com, we used construction paper and cooking oil to create our own x-ray pieces of artwork.  The works show the difference bones found in our hands when held up to a light source.
