Cubing Trinomials

Some students explored the trinomial cube today.  The cube is first introduced as a sensorial material in the primary classroom.  What seems like a basic wooden-block puzzle is actually used again in the upper elementary classroom to discover the formula for cubing trinomials (three digit numbers).  Each block represents a different step in the process:

(A + B + C)3 = A3 + 3A2B + 3AB2 + 3A2C + B3 + 6ABC + 3B2C +3AC+ 3 BC2 + C3

Why is it important to read for 20 each night?

As you know, your nightly homework is to study you vocabulary/word study words for 10 minutes and to read a book of your choice for 20 minutes.  Studying gets you ready for your Friday quizzes, but why read?  By reading for at least 20 minutes each evening, you are exposing yourself to MILLIONS of words that help you improve your vocabulary skills.  Equally important:  reading is fun!

The Week of October 30, 2017

Welcome to the last few days of October!  As we make our way into November, take advantage of the time you have in the classroom to learn as much as possible.   This week's lessons will include working with weather forecasting, indirect measurement, wind, fraction/decimal/percent computation, and post-Civil War America.  Please remember to finish your follow-up work after each of your lessons.  Your required assignments will include your weekly Google Classroom Journal, based upon a current event article.  Please have the journal completed by the end of the day THURSDAY.  This will allow Ms. Koral and myself time to respond to your work Friday.  You will also have a word study quiz Friday.  You will get your words Monday.  Please study them daily to be prepared for your quiz. As always, structure your time so you can achieve your 30 minute weekly goal of online www.tenmarks.com practice and weekly Greek & Latin root work requirement.

Please keep the following things in mind concerning this upcoming week:

1.  Signed progress reports are due Monday.
2.  I will be traveling to Knoxville this Thursday and Friday.  I expect a good report from the substitute upon my return.  Because of my absence, you will NOT have a progress report this upcoming week.  Your next progress report will be sent home Friday, November 10th.

Have a wonderful weekend,
Mr. Trent

4th Grade Field Trip to the Jepson to View Rodin: The Human Experience

Every year 4th grade students from Savannah Chatham County elementary schools are invited to attend an educational program at the Jepson Center for the Arts. The program includes a docent led tour of the current exhibition and a related studio activity in the museum classroom.  This year the program will focus on Rodin: The HumanExperience.

“Auguste Rodin is regarded by many as the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo.  He created his own unique style of sculpture capturing movement and emotion.  Rodin used his techniques to break away from the traditional styles and gestures.”

We are looking forward to this trip with our 4th grade students! Please complete the permission form, publicity waiver, and museum disclaimer that were sent home.   Please return these to your student’s homeroom teacher as soon as possible.  We will not be able to accept forms or verbal phone permission on the morning of the trip.
