The Week of January 3, 2017

A new year is like a blank book, and the pen is in your hands.
It is your chance to write a beautiful story for yourself.

Welcome to 2017!  I'm excited to start the second half of the school year with you!  Because this first week back is only 3 days, we will not be able to return to our normal routines yet.  Be expecting a shortened schedule this week, and a regular lesson schedule next week.

We will start out the first term in math by reviewing the properties of multiplication.  We are taking the time to do this so that we can use these properties to help us with out upcoming geometry studies (that can be very computation-heavy).   We've touched on the distributive property already this year, and you may have come across some of the other properties in some of your studies in the past.  This week, we will put them all together!   While you will have lessons and followup classwork to complete, you will NOT have any math homework, TenMarks, journal, or quiz!  Here's an additional resource you can use to help you understand the properties of multiplication:

This week we will start our next unit of study in science: weather!  Our first weather lessons will focus on the layers of Earth's atmosphere.  By the end of next week, you will be able to describe each of the 4 basic layers of Earth's atmosphere!  While you will NOT have a vocabulary quiz in science this week, you will have a test next Friday.  Use the following study guide to help you prepare:

Use your work time to do research about Earth's atmosphere.  Complete the following choice sheet by next Friday.  The choices on the sheet will help guide your research, but don't let the choices hold you back from doing other creative activities you wish to do with your research.

Parent/Teacher conferences will take place the week of January 9.  You will get a conference request form Wednesday.  Please identify the times you will be able to meet with your child's homeroom teacher to discuss their progress.  Return it by Friday, January 6.  We will staple your scheduled conference time in your child's planner.  We look forward to speaking to you about what's been happening at Ellis!

Finally, I will NOT be holding math tutorial this or next week.  Tutorial will resume Wednesday, January, 18.

I'll see you soon!
Mr. Trent
