2012-2013 Bell Times

Bell times will be a little different this upcoming school year.  Please see the following note from Mr. Charles:

Ellis new bell times will be 8:00-3:15.  This means the following:

-Breakfast will begin at 8:00

-Students may begin arriving at 8:00

-Class will begin at 8:30

-Students will be counted tardy after 8:30.

-With an end time of 3:15, Ellis will BEGIN dismissal at 3:00 to ensure student safety.

2012-2013 6th Grade Supply List

Here's a heads-up on the supplies that will be needed by all upcoming 6th graders for the new school year. Often the best school supply sales happen before our supply list arrives in your mailbox.   

*2 three-inch ring binders

*1 one-inch ring binder

*notebook dividers (package of 5)

*1 composition book

*pencils (we recommend Mirado or Ticonderoga brands)

*colored pencils or crayons (Basic colors)

*erasers(Cap erasers and big pink erasers)

* Glue stick

*enclosed pencil sharpener( keeps the pencil shavings to a minimum)

*pencil bag ( Please do not bring a box, we do not have the space for it)

* Pocket dictionary and thesaurus ($1.00 at Walmart or Dollar Tree)

*200 index cards

* 1 package of construction paper (50 sheets)

**These are things that will be helpful to the entire class:  paper towels, spray cleanser, Clorox wipes, notebook paper, graphing paper, dry erase markers and erasers, and tissues!

Summer Reading Requirement

While you are enjoying your summer vacation, take some time to enjoy a good book, too!  Info. about the summer reading requirements can be found here.  Be sure to choose books that are on your lexile level.  Your lexile was sent home with you the last week of school on a half-sheet of paper.  If you misplaced the paper, your lexile will also be on your CRCT score sheet that will be sent with your report card later this week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Our Final Day as a 6th Grade Class!

Today was a mixture of happiness and tears!  Seeing our classroom all packed up really made me realize that the year was finally coming to an end.  I've enjoyed teaching each and every one of  you!  I will always have great memories of this year's class.  Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Water Color Kits

Today, we repurposed Altoids tins and made water color kits! Take these kits along with you on your adventures this summer to artistically capture your memories.

Summer Reading Program Correction

Last week, I sent home a summer reading pamphlet outlining the reading requirements for this summer.  Your child's lexile level was written on the front cover.  It has come to my attention that some of the lexile levels were written incorrectly.  I am sending home a GREEN sheet today with your child's name and correct lexile level.  Please use this number when identifying books to read this summer.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Waste Water Treatment Simulation

Mr. Brandon created a simulated waste water treatment plant for us to investigate. What are the stages of treating water before it is deemed safe to return to the environment?

An Environmental Mystery

Today, we worked together to solve and environmental mystery about arsenic found in drinking water in a fictional town. Although it was just pretend, we also investigated the very real environmental disaster that happened at Love Canal in New York State in the late 1970's.

The Week of June 4, 2012: The Last Week of School!

Welcome to the last week to school!  I'm sure you are excited to get your summer started, but we have one last week together, so let's make the most of it!

This week, we will be doing a lot of activities that incorporate what we studied this year.  We will take a look at the Fundamental Needs of Man Montessori lesson again to see if we can think more critically about the interconnectedness of the world around us.  We will also use those bottle caps and Altoids tins to create an awesome portable art set you can use to create mini-masterpieces of things you observe in nature.  Mr. Brandon will stop by to say hello (and goodbye) and share one last lesson with you on water purification.  On Tuesday afternoon, we will cheer on our fellow Bobcats at the annual Ellis Has Talent show! After we have cleaned all the materials and "closed" our classroom, we will enjoy one last meal together on Friday.  Friends and family members are invited to come and join the fun!  After lunch, I will award the Student Superlatives that you will vote on this week.

Don't forget to bring a dollar on Thursday to dress down.  All money raised will help pay for the 8th grade graduation ceremony.  Friday is a FREE dress down day for everyone!
