Georgia Needs a Summer Home!

Our classroom pet chinchilla, Georgia, needs a place to stay over the summer.  I will provide all the supplies...all you need to give is a caring hand.  She is really easy to take care of!  Please let me know if you would be willing to take her for a few weeks (or the entire summer).

The Week of May 29, 2012

Happy Memorial Day!  I know we have a lot of students in our classroom and school who have family members in the military.  Take some time today to thank them for their commitment to helping protect the freedoms we hold so dear here in the United States.

Tomorrow, we will start the second to last week of school!  Please keep in mind that ALL WORK is due this Friday by 2:00.  This includes your "Sailing into Summer" choice sheet, your final geometry sky tower assignment, and any "missing" work from the term.  Any work not completed by 2:00 Friday will need to be done next week during the usual fun "last week of school" activities.

All media center books are due back to Ms. Rebecca Tuesday.  In addition, your AR goals are due that day.

Ms. Carol and myself will be starting parent/teacher conferences this week.  Please ask us if you need a reminder of your scheduled time.  Also, if you need to reschedule, please let us know ASAP.  Remember, you are more than welcome to attend the conference with your parents.

Friday at 2:00 will be the annual faculty vs. students basketball game!  While I won't be showing off my basketball skills, I plan on making a lot of noise on the edge of the court supporting my coworkers...I have a feeling we are going to win this year!

Don't forget to be bringing in any plastic bottle caps and empty Altoids tins for a special craft we will be doing next week.

Finally, have you been following Tropical Storm Beryl?  Check out the NOAA site for up-to-the minute information and forecasts.  We'll talk a little more about this storm in the morning.

See you tomorrow,
Mr. Trent

Ten Marks Summer Program

We've been using the Ten Marks math program during this school year to help us master the 6th grade math objectives.  Ten Marks also has a summer program you can sign up for that will allow students to continue practicing math throughout the break.  Here is some information about the program:

When you sign up for the summer program, we'll ask you for the grade level your student will be entering in the Fall. Based on that information, we'll create a diagnostic assessment, which is the first thing your student will do.
Once they've completed the assessment, we'll instantly evaluate the results and create a customized curriculum to meet their specific needs, whether it's catching them up on concepts they didn't master last year or preparing them for the year ahead.

How It Works
Students are guided through their personalized curriculum, one concept at a time. They receive "smart worksheets" on each topic, with the goal of helping them master that topic.
Each worksheet has 10 unique problems - of varying types and difficulty. While working on the problems, student can use hints and video lessons to refresh what they know, learn what they don't.
Students work at their own pace, on their own time. The TenMarks approach engages students and provides help when needed. Rewards, games, and certificates motivate them to succeed.

Our summer program is very affordable at $39.99 per student. We're sure your student will love the program, but we offer a money-back guarantee! Let us know within two weeks and we'll give you a full refund.

The Week of May 14, 2012

We have a busy week coming up; I hope you are ready!

We will be working through Wednesday to prepare your lessons for your classmates.  We will be presenting Thursday and Friday.  Please be sure to use the rubric I posted last week so you will get full credit for your lesson.  If you are not finished planning your lesson by Wednesday, you MUST work on it Wednesday night to be ready to present Thursday.  I will be choosing the presentation order randomly, so you could be the first one to go on Thursday (fingers crossed)!  I can't stress how important it is to practice your speech many times before you present it to the class.  Remember, it must be 5-10 minutes long.  It must include an appropriate visual aid and at least one question for the class to answer.  In addition to getting a grade on your lesson, you will also get a grade on your participation in other students' lessons.  So, please show courtesy to your classmates when they are speaking and ask appropriate questions.

Keep in mind you will also have a geometry sky tower assignment due this Friday.  You will not have time to work on it Thursday or Friday (because of presentations), so you will need to complete it by Wednesday.

Here are a few other things happening this week:
1.  Ms. Carla will be pulling some students on Monday and Tuesday to complete some College411 questionnaires.
2.  The 2 & 3 Art Show will be Wednesday evening at 6:30.  I hope to see you at this amazing annual celebration creativity!
3.  Auditions for Ellis Got Talent will take place. Please see the schedule I posted by the door for your audition time.  Break a leg!

Finally (and most importantly), don't forget to give your mom a big hug and wish her a Happy Mother's Day!

See you tomorrow,
Mr. Trent

The Week of May 7th, 2012.

Are you counting the days until the end of the school year?  Not so fast, we have a lot to focus on before you trade in your pencils and folders for sunglasses and swim gear!

CRCT testing continues this Monday and Tuesday with the Science and Social Studies tests.  I know as testing comes to a close, it is tempting to get a bit lazy and not try as hard as you did the first week of testing.  Please, resist that urge and try your best.  Get at least 8 hours of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. I'll provide some more power water for you to enjoy!

After testing, we will be able to get back to our normal routines.  On Wednesday, we will be picking topics for our 6th grade "year in review" lessons.  Everyone will be required to present a review lesson on a topic we studied this year.  You will be provided a rubric that you will use to guide your presentation.  Here is the rubric:

Review Lesson Presentation Rubric

Points Possible
Points Awarded
Visual Aid (neat, informative)

Oral explanation of topic (correct information)

Practice problem/question for class (appropriate/explained correctly)

Presentation style (easily understood voice, appropriate body language, 5 -10 minutes)

Your 5 – 10 minute presentation will be due Thursday, May 17th.   Names will be “pulled from a hat” to see the order in which presentation are done.  You are expected to be respectful of your classmates while they are leading the class by listening attentively, asking appropriate questions, and offering words of encouragement.  You will be given plenty of work time to plan and practice your presentation.

Please keep in mind that you will also have another geometry sky tower due this Friday.  Be sure you are keeping up to date with your sky tower requirements.  The final sky tower assignment (and FULL sky tower coversheet) is due Friday, June 1st.

This week will end on a high note with the middle school dance on Friday!  Be sure to sign and return the permission form if you wish to attend.  Also, tickets are cheaper if you buy them in advance, so plan ahead to save some money.

Finally, a few people still owe money for spring pictures.  Please return to me any pictures you do not wish to purchase as soon as possible.  If you wish to purchase pictures, keep what you wish and submit you payment.

Let's have a wonderful week,
Mr. Trent

Similar Figures, Proportions, and a Scream!

Today, we used our knowledge of similar figures and proportional relationships to recreate Edvard Munch's famous painting The Scream.  This paiting recently sold at an auction for a record 120 million dollars!  I think the masterpieces we made today are priceless!
